MBBS in Nepal for Indian students
MBBS in Nepal is a 5.5-year course, including a one-year internship, regulated by Nepal's Medical Education Commission. Why Bihar families look at Nepal
Bihar shares a long open border with Nepal, with crossings such as Raxaul to Birgunj and Jogbani to Biratnagar. Indian citizens do not need a visa. Food, climate and language are familiar, the course structure is close to India's, and parents can visit without a flight.
How admission works
- Medical education in Nepal is regulated by the Medical Education Commission (MEC), which conducts a common entrance examination, MECEE-BL. Foreign candidates, including Indians, have to clear it to be admitted.
- Seats for foreign students are limited in each college and filled on MECEE-BL merit.
- Medical colleges are affiliated to universities such as Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University, or are autonomous institutions such as B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
- Qualifying NEET-UG in India remains necessary if you want to practise in India.
Cost
Fees are fixed for each college and published with the MEC admission notice. They are generally higher than in Kyrgyzstan or Russia, and for many families comparable with a private seat in India. Ask for the current year's fee notice and payment schedule in writing.
What to get in writing from the university
- Total course length in months, and that it is completed in one institution.
- That a 12-month internship is done in that same institution, and where.
- That teaching and examinations are in English for the whole course.
- That the degree makes you eligible for a licence to practise in that country.
- The fee for each year, in which currency, and what it includes.
There is no "NMC-approved" list of foreign universities. The National Medical Commission does not approve, recognise or rank foreign medical colleges. It lays down conditions in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. The responsibility for checking that a course meets them rests with the student.

Do Indian students need a visa to study MBBS in Nepal?
No. Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter or study in Nepal. You will still need the college's admission documents and valid identity papers.
Is NEET enough for MBBS in Nepal?
No. NEET-UG qualification is needed for later practice in India, but admission in Nepal is through the Medical Education Commission's entrance examination, MECEE-BL, which Indian applicants must also clear.
How long is MBBS in Nepal?
Five and a half years: four and a half years of study and a one-year internship.
Do graduates from Nepal have to take FMGE?
Yes. A medical degree from Nepal is a foreign medical qualification. To practise in India the graduate must meet the NMC's 2021 regulations and pass the screening test.
