What the course is
Georgian universities award a Medical Doctor (MD) degree after a six-year, 360-credit programme under the European credit system. Programmes are authorised and accredited by Georgia's National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, and several are taught in English for international students.
What to look at closely
- Internship. The NMC requires a 12-month internship in the same institution. Ask the university how its final-year clinical training is structured and documented, and whether it issues a separate internship certificate.
- Licence eligibility. Ask whether the degree by itself makes a graduate eligible to be licensed in Georgia, and what else is required.
- Accreditation status. Confirm the programme's current accreditation, not only the university's.
- Cost of living. Tuition is usually charged in US dollars, and living costs in Tbilisi are higher than in Central Asia.
Students need a visa and a residence permit. Georgian is needed for patient contact in the clinical years.
What to get in writing from the university
- Total course length in months, and that it is completed in one institution.
- That a 12-month internship is done in that same institution, and where.
- That teaching and examinations are in English for the whole course.
- That the degree makes you eligible for a licence to practise in that country.
- The fee for each year, in which currency, and what it includes.
There is no "NMC-approved" list of foreign universities. The National Medical Commission does not approve, recognise or rank foreign medical colleges. It lays down conditions in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. The responsibility for checking that a course meets them rests with the student.
