BDS admission guidance
BDS is a five-year dental degree: four years of study and a one-year internship. Admission is through NEET-UG, in the same MCC and state counselling as MBBS. In Bihar, BCECEB allots BDS seats through UGMAC. SG Global Education helps you place BDS correctly in your choice list.

Eligibility for BDS
The eligibility is the same as for MBBS: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, the minimum age of 17 by 31 December of the admission year, and a NEET-UG qualification for that year. Dental education is regulated by the National Dental Commission, which has replaced the Dental Council of India under the National Dental Commission Act, 2023.
How BDS seats are filled
- All-India quota and deemed universities: through MCC, in the same registration as MBBS.
- Bihar state quota and private dental colleges: through BCECEB's UGMAC counselling.
- Other states: through that state's NEET-UG counselling authority.
Bihar has a government dental college, Patna Dental College and Hospital, and private dental colleges in Patna, Darbhanga and other towns. The year's seat matrix lists the colleges taking part.
No seat exists outside counselling. Management quota and NRI quota seats are also filled from the NEET-UG merit list by the counselling authority. If anyone offers you a seat for cash without counselling, walk away, and report it to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Where BDS goes in your choice list
Because MBBS and BDS share one counselling, the order of your choices decides the outcome. A student who wants MBBS but would accept a government BDS seat needs a different list from one who prefers a private MBBS seat over any BDS seat. Getting this wrong can mean being allotted a seat you did not want, or none at all.

- We compare the full five-year cost of government and private dental seats.
- We explain what happens to a BDS seat if you later upgrade to MBBS.

Questions people ask us
Is NEET compulsory for BDS?
Yes. Every BDS seat in India, government or private, is filled from the NEET-UG merit list through counselling.
Is there separate counselling for BDS in Bihar?
No. BCECEB allots BDS seats in the same UGMAC counselling as MBBS, and MCC does the same for the all-India quota. You register once with each authority and list MBBS and BDS choices together.
How long is the BDS course?
Five years: four years of academic study followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship.
Can I move from BDS to MBBS in a later round?
If your rank allows, an upgrade is possible within the rules of that counselling round. Whether you may keep, resign or upgrade a seat, and what it costs, depends on the round and the authority. Ask us before you join a seat.
