MBBS in Kyrgyzstan for Indian students
Kyrgyzstan is one of the lower-cost destinations for medical study, with universities in Bishkek, Osh and Jalal-Abad. A degree from there can lead to practice in India only if the programme meets the NMC's 2021 regulations on length, internship and English-medium teaching. Why it is popular
Tuition and living costs in Kyrgyzstan are low compared with most other destinations, flights from Delhi are short, and there is a large Indian student community with Indian food available near many campuses.
Why it needs the closest scrutiny
- Course length. Programmes of different lengths are offered to foreign students. The NMC requires at least 54 months of study and, in addition, a 12-month internship in the same institution. Confirm both from the university in writing.
- Medium of instruction. It must be English for the whole course, including clinical teaching.
- Class size and hospitals. Ask how many foreign students are admitted each year and which teaching hospitals they train in.
- Safety. Check current advisories from the Embassy of India in Bishkek before travelling.
The low fee is only a saving if the degree can be registered in India at the end of it.
What to get in writing from the university
- Total course length in months, and that it is completed in one institution.
- That a 12-month internship is done in that same institution, and where.
- That teaching and examinations are in English for the whole course.
- That the degree makes you eligible for a licence to practise in that country.
- The fee for each year, in which currency, and what it includes.
There is no "NMC-approved" list of foreign universities. The National Medical Commission does not approve, recognise or rank foreign medical colleges. It lays down conditions in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. The responsibility for checking that a course meets them rests with the student.
